Early Intervention

Mother and Child at a Sheridan Wyoming, Preschool and Developmental screening center.

Bighorn Development Center’s Early Intervention Programs, for birth through two and ages three through five, provide a variety of services to help children meet developmental milestones and maximize developmental progress.

Our certified teachers and therapists work with the family and children to provide an IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) or IEP (Individualized Education Program) based on the child’s age to support the child’s developmental needs. Services are provided in their natural environment (home or childcare) for children age birth through two and in an educational setting (preschool) for children ages three through five.

These services are provided at no-cost to the family based on state and federal funding and generous donations from our community partners.

Birth Through Two Years

This program is a family focused and designed for children with developmental delays or those who are “at risk” for a developmental delay. These delays are determined through developmental screening and further assessment when needed. The purpose of this infant and toddler program is to teach and model strategies for the parent based on the identified areas of concern for the family. These areas of family concern help establish family outcomes (goals) and other areas of the IFSP.

Three Through Five Years

This program is designed for children who are found eligible through a comprehensive assessment process. This process begins with a full evaluation which targets the child’s identified areas of strength and areas of delay and the development of the IEP. The services outlined in the IEP are provided within preschool programs which focus on educating children with disabilities in the regular education environment. This provides children with disabilities the opportunity to interact and learn with their non-disabled peers in order to promote maximum developmental growth.

Embedded Preschool Support

We partner with families, our on-site preschool program, and community-based preschools to support children within their natural learning environments. Through collaborative planning and direct services, our teaching and therapy teams work alongside preschool staff to provide strategies, modeling, and individualized instruction based on each child’s goals. This integrated approach encourages meaningful progress while children participate in familiar classroom routines and peer interactions.

Therapies & Intervention

At Bighorn Development Center, we provide a range of individualized services for children from birth through age five who may benefit from additional support in their development. Our services are delivered by licensed and certified professionals and are tailored to meet the unique needs of each child.

  • Family Service Coordinators serve as the primary contact for families with children from birth through age two. They help guide families through the early intervention process, offering strategies for daily routines, connecting families to local resources, and providing ongoing support every step of the way.

  • Our Early Childhood Special Educators work directly with children who qualify for special education services. Support may include activities that help children build early learning skills, navigate peer and adult interactions, follow directions, and develop emotional regulation and behavior strategies in a play-based setting.

  • Occupational Therapists (OTs) focus on fine motor skills, sensory processing, and everyday functional tasks. Areas of support include hand-eye coordination, dressing, feeding, play skills, and regulation of sensory input and movement.

  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) support the development of communication skills. This includes understanding and using language, speech sound pronunciation, voice concerns, feeding, and swallowing. When needed, SLPs also help children and families explore alternative communication tools.

  • Physical Therapists (PTs) help children improve large muscle movements used for activities like sitting, crawling, walking, running, and balance. They also assist with adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs or walkers to support mobility and participation in daily routines and play.

  • Additional specialized services may be available based on each child’s needs and may include support from:

    • Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

    • Teachers of the Deaf (TOD)

    • Educational Sign Language Interpreters

These services can be included in a child’s IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) or IEP (Individualized Education Program) as needed.
